Courses Offered
The University of Rochester's ASL Program is a modern language, literature and culture program, which also approaches the study of signed languages from a linguistic and scientific perspective. The ASL Program offers a major or a minor in ASL. The major requires twelve courses: six core courses and six advanced elective courses. Electives must include two courses in ASL Literature and Culture and two courses in Linguistics and Psycholinguistics, as well as two additional electives. The minor requires six courses: three basic/intermediate languages courses and three elective courses selected from the core and elective course offerings. Students with majors in other divisions can broaden their education with course clusters in ASL.
The ASL Program has course offerings in several categories including Language Courses, Linguistics of Signed Languages, Literary Forms of ASL, Cultural Aspects of the Deaf Community, Pedagogical Training and Allied Courses.
